DaVinci Resolve 14: RAW Highlight Recovery

All images are exported directly from Resolve as [inherently] lossless PNG {portable network file}. The resulting images do not have an .ICC {International Color Consortium} profile embedded in them, and as far as I'm concerned Resolve does not give an option to do so.

Even when changing the output color space [Rec.709, Rec.2020] no .ICC gets attached. Neither does changing the encoding format [JPEG, PNG] have any effect.

That said, let's dive in.

Here we have both a RAW image from the Blackmagic URSA MINI 4K and it's accompanying scope, viewed at the default CinemaDNG settings of DaVinci Resolve 14. Notice that there is a lot of white looking outside of the window but there is no aggressive clipping. This is because the 'Highlight Recovery' feature is activated in the RAW adjustments panel of Resolve.

Now let us have a look at the same image while highlight recovery is switched off.

Oh deer, the highlights have been completely blown out to white. (1023, 1023, 1023 in 10-bit RGB values). Looking at the scope, we can see this by the complete cutoff of signal above about 950.
Deactivating the highlight recovery feature comes in handy when you are trying to blow out the background to pure white as is standard practice for product shots. But if you're looking to take advantage of the full dynamic range of your camera, keep the feature checked.
