With Blackmagic speed test the write speed varied greatly from between 300-520MB/s, possibly due to the disks not all spinning exactly at once.
Thunderbolt 3 reassures that there is no bottle neck occurring between drives and the host. Considering overhead, the maximum bandwidth of USB 3.1 Gen 1 is 400MB/s which is already being topped with 4 drives during read. In theory then, USB 3.1 Gen 1 could be used for this 4x HDD RAID 0 configuration. With 4x solid state drives instead of hard disks, Thunderbolt 3 would then become necessary.
As a refresher
USB 2.0 - 48 MB/s
USB 3.1 Gen 1 - 400 MB/s (link flow control, packet framing, 8b/10b protocol overhead considered)
USB 3.1 Gen 2 - 900 MB/s (128b/132b encoding)
Thunderbolt 3 - 4.85 GB/s (128b/132b encoding)
