JPEG and JPEG2000

The perceived quality of JPEG2000 Lossless compared to JPEG at Best is indistinguishable. The respective 10.3MB to 10.1MB doesn’t help the .jp2 adoption argument either.

Between opening and making adjustments, macOS seems to stumble with JPEG-2000. Most likely because the newer codec is not optimized as much as the more common JPEG. Also hardware acceleration may be lacking but I cannot confirm this.

Both options save 2.5x on storage compared to the uncompressed TIFF format that comes in at a whopping 24.9MB for the same image.

Saving to OpenEXR in Preview results in a highly washed out 25.4MB do to the fact that this format is used with an HDR gamma and I am viewing it on a MacBook Pro screen which has SDR 2.4 gamma.

UPDATE: Blogger will not accept a JPEG2000 upload :(
