There are a few very welcome new features in the latest nightly builds of Handbrake as 2017 comes to a close:
Remember H.264 (x264)? Yeah we don’t talk about that old hat encoder any longer HAHA. [I won’t even acknowledge the MPEG-2/MPEG-4 options]
H.265 (x265) now comes in 8-bit, 10-bit and even 12-bit flavors!
For those who are already finishing in 4K HDR10, the 10-bit option is a must if you plan on sticking to the Ultra HD Premium and Ultra HD Blu-Ray white papers.
On the frame rate horizon, 120fps is finally supported! Though this is an extremely rare use case, once you’ve seen 120Hz on the new iPad Pro it is next to impossible to go back to 60fps within games and GUI. 4K 2160p120 playback will have to wait until the bandwidth increase within HDMI 2.1. But until then, 1080p120 video is officially supported within the current HDMI 2.0 spec. That said, I have never actually seen 1080p120 played back at 120fps. It’s always used as a 5X slow motion effect for 24p. But since my URSA MINI 4K can indeed record in said format (as well as every flagship smartphone)
