Sony A6500 | EXFAT on 64GB SD cards only (sort of)

Out shooting another 4K hiking video I ran into another recording limit with the A6500. After the 4K video file reaches just over 4GB, the file splits into a new file. Though no frames are lost this is very aggravating because you will have to stitch together many files before uploading one long clip. In my case a long hike. Turns out though the problem is a bit more in depth. The A6500 will only format an SD card in EXFAT format (no recording size limit) if the card is 64GB or larger. Explaining why my 32GB SanDisk SD card will only format to FAT32 and split each video file once it hits 4GB.

The good news is that the SD card works fine when formatted to EXFAT from your computer and forgoes that 4GB file limit, even on a 32GB card. Why Sony decided to do this instead of formatting all cards to EXFAT is beyond me. Most likely for compatibility issues because there will be people out there still running an old version of OS X and Windows that does not yet support EXFAT. Yet you would at least hope that if you are willing to buy the newest $1400 camera from Sony you'd also be willing to have a relatively up to date computer to go with it.
