Frame rate

As of 2013 we're faced with 8 different playback frame rates to shoot in:

23.976         24         25         29.97         30         50         59.94         60

Wether people stuck in the 20th century like it or not we've moved to digital broadcasting, electrically negating the need for the 1/1001 frame rates of the analog broadcasting days gone past. Now we're down to 5.

24        25        30        50       60

In a world where every person gets their information from the same internet, there's really no line between those who use 25fps PAL and those who use 29.976fps anymore so there's no need for the two. And most computers accept 50Hz/60Hz power sources too.

Now to the visual side. 60fps is smooth. Very smooth. And is such suitable for and enhances real life scenarios such as news broadcasting and live events. 24fps is not smooth and appears very different. 'Cinematic' as most call it and I agree, A war film such as Letters from Iwo Jima would just be oddly fluid in 60fps. And to the same degree the NBC nightly news would be strangely choppy if shown in 24fps. And sports in any rate under 60 you can just forget. Now we're down to 3.

24     30     60

If I had my way there'd just be 24 and 60 and eventually 120 (which NHK has already prototyped). But there will always be those who say 60 is too 'Soap Opera' for them. But than again there's also those who still only listen to vinyl records through digital amplifiers...

Oh and interlacing? With ATSC 3.0 and H.265 thankfully it will be a thing of the past.
